Ephemeral Groups are used to chat among an arbitrary group of users without forming a formal group.

To create an Ephemeral Group:

  • Join one of the ephemeral groups, ephemeral_1, ephemeral_2 or ephemeral_3. They are open enrollment, so they can be joined immediately.
    • Open Search box in viewer
    • Click on Groups tab
    • Fill in ephemeral in the search box and click Search button
    • Select which of the 3 you want to join (you can join them all, it really doesn't matter which)
    • Click the Join button
  • Open one of those groups for chatting.
  • Enter the command @open <ephemeralgroupname> <optionalpassword>
  • You should see an acknowledgement that the ephemeral group is created.
  • Invite others to join via IM. You will have to give them the <ephemeralgroupanem> and <optionalpassword>.
  • You should see a message as each person joins.
  • Chat away ...
  • When done, enter the @leave command and the others will see that you have left.
  • You can either close the ephemeral_<n> screen or use it to access another ephemeral group.

If someone invites you to join an Ephemeral Group:

  • Join one of the ephemeral groups, ephemeral_1, ephemeral_2 or ephemeral_3. They are open enrollment, so they can be joined immediately.
    • Open Search box in viewer
    • Click on Groups tab
    • Fill in ephemeral in the search box and click Search button
    • Select which of the 3 you want to join (you can join them all, it really doesn't matter which)
    • Click the Join button
  • Open one of those groups for chatting.
  • Enter the command @join <ephemeralgroupname> <optionalpassword> using the values the person gave you in the invitation.
  • You should see and acknowledgement that you have joined the group.
  • A message will be presented to the others in the group announcing that you have joined.
  • You will see messages indicating when others join.
  • Chat away ...
  • When done, enter the @leave command and the others will see that you have left.
  • You can either close the ephemeral_<n> screen or use it to access another ephemeral group.

The Ephemeral Group will be deleted when the last person leaves.

Rules:

  • You can use any of the ephemeral_1, _2 or _3 to access ephemeral groups, as long as you aren't already using it for another ephemeral group. All people in the ephemeral group do not need to use the same ephemeral_1, _2 or _3 group.
  • You can be a permanent member of each of ephemeral_1, ephemeral_2 and ephemeral_3. This will allow you to be a member of up to 3 ephemeral groups as a time.
  • All chat lines beginning with @ will be interpreted as a command. All chat lines not beginning with @ will be treated as chat text.
  • You remain part of the group from either the @open or @join command until the @leave command. You remain part of the group even if logged out but you will not get any messages while logged out.

Commands:

  • @help - displays a simple help message
  • @join <ephemeralgroupname> <optionalpassword> - join an existing ephemeral group
    • <ephemeralgroupname> : name of the ephemeral group you want to join
    • <optionalpassword> : password the group was created with if any
  • @leave - leave the ephemeral group
  • @open - create a new ephemeral group and join it
    • <ephemeralgroupname> : name of the ephemeral group you want to join
    • <optionalpassword> : password the group was created with if any
  • @who - list who is currently in the ephemeral group
